October 22, 2008, 11:37
Vietnam consistently takes an active part in regional and global cooperation in the field of agriculture, said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat

Minister Phat was speaking at the ASEAN meeting of agriculture and forestry senior officials (SOM + 3) (denoting the additional participation of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea), which took place in Hanoi on Oct. 22.

The meeting aims to prepare reports to be discussed at the ASEAN Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF), including cooperation activities and financial plans for the future.

During the SOM+3, participants focused their discussion on ensuring food for the poor and expanding the agro-forestry market through establishing free trade areas among ASEAN member countries. They also worked out measures to boost human resource development and technology transfer in order to increase the quality of agricultural products and sharpen their competitive edge in the international market.

Minister Phat said that the AMAF is a good chance for ASEAN member countries to strengthen their cooperation on coping with food and financial crises which affect the living conditions of hundreds of millions of poor people and farmers in the region.

After 13 years as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam has leant a great deal in terms of experience and technology from ASEAN member countries and their dialogue partners, especially in the breeding of vegetables, bio-technology, standards for plant and animal quarantine, and the sustainable management of forests. The country has grasped every opportunity offered by cooperation programmes to raise the position of its agricultural sector in the region and open up its farm product market in order to ensure a stable income and production activities for farmers.
